I watch a lot of Law & Order, the original show (LO) and the Special Victims Unit (LO:SVU) as well as the Criminal Intent (LO:CI) spin off. I got deeply interested in the New York and US Federal statutes on homicide and the related criminal offenses.

Below is information related to the prosecutional aspect of the original series, to which an episode's second half is typically decicated.

My American criminal system overview is a good place to start if you don't know the US System very well.

Then you may like straight at New York State Chapter 40.
